There are many cracked or unlicensed copies of Proteus about. I was always telling my students not to use these as it was basically illegal and also against University policy (to use any unlicensed software). Fortunately the owners of Proteus used to give us about 100 free student licences every year, probably as we spent a fortune on renewing the licence every year, but these only lasted a year.
I preferred EasyPCB, I wonder if this is still going, but I was not the decision maker.
It did take me about 10 years to learn how to use Proteus and even at the end it would still do things that I could not understand, or prevent, or even repeat.
